The Quinta de São
Sebastião, with its own Chapel of S. Sebastião and its farmhouse, is situated
in the center of the parish of Facha, at 6 km from Ponte de Lima, on a lovely
hillside with view to the Lima valley.
The Chapel of S. Sebastião, dating back to the fifteenth century, once owned
the house, which dates back to the eighteenth century. The quinta, chapel
and farm were once owned by the parish teacher, who taught school in the main
room of the house itself. The architecture of the house is in the style
of a wealthy farmer's house, and has been enlarged three times over the
centuries. It is adjacent to the section of the Camino de Santiago which
pilgrims use to walk between Porto and Ponte de Lima.
Today the Quinta de São Sebastião has regained its ancient splendor, having
been fully restored as part of the Rural Tourism system, offering to
groups of up to 10 guests the completely contemporary accommodations of its 5
double rooms, several common rooms, a garden and a large swimming pool in an
idyllic setting.
With a history that dates back over more than 100 years, this is a home that
oozes charm and a distinct sense of heritage. Within the ancient walls
that surround its fashionably uncluttered interior tales of its past have been
lovingly preserved. On the upper floor original stone seats sit either
side of traditionally painted windows; in the atmospheric kitchen stone ovens
have been retained alongside the gleaming units of their up-to-date equivalent;
a now unused set of stone steps still bears the imprints of the metal soled
clogs worn by the many children who inhabited the property when it was a
schoolhouse.
Encircling this delightful residence are the equally enticing gardens, which enjoy scenic views towards the gently undulating slopes of the Serra de No. Olive, fig and orange are just some of the varied fruit trees that are dotted across the extensive lawns surrounding the swimming pool whilst pretty terraces are bordered with the colourful foliage of flowering plants.
