On the small village of Albergaria dos Fusos on the Cuba County, we find Casa do Alto da Eira. Carefully restored it maintains the typical looks of a house from Alentejo. The house is located on the most elevated part of the village, where on the past were the yards used to dry crops – hence the name of the house (Casa do Alto da Eira means House on the top of the yard).
The owner Luís Varela is a local from Alentejo, that when found the ruins from what would become Casa do Alto da Eira didn’t hesitate to work and began rebuilding it keeping the original style. The stone wall that surrounds the house was made from rocks that the owner took from the surrounding fields.
The interior of the house has four comfortable bedrooms, all with private bathrooms, that join traditional looks to modern comforts. A wide living room with a fireplace and a wood oven has been built for the colder days of winter, and is useful for those that wish to just lounge and talk with friends.
Casa do Alto da Eira can also be occupied exclusively by your group of friends or family. If you choose to do this you can also use the kitchen where there are the necessary tools to make a snack or a more hearty meal.
As for the furniture the materials of choice are wood and iron, materials worked by a local artisan, as one can see by their style.
On the exterior of the house we can also find a peculiarity of Casa do Alto da Eira A Piscina Biológica (the biological pool). With a considerable size it is about as big as the house, this pool is truly a complete ecosystem. It is decorated with lily pads and flowers with bright colours that contrast with the dark green water. There is also an underwater division that separates the swimming area of the pool from the aquatic plants area. Still you should know that when swimming you will have to share the pool with frogs, dragonflies and other insects that do not respect the barrier.
Beyond the pool you can find the olive grove. You can go through it on foot or using a bicycle to follow the trail that takes you to the Alvito dam.
From Casa do Alto da Eira you can also contemplate nature and the surrounding fields on all its glory. Get to know the true Alentejo and to finish your day there is nothing better to recover than to taste the rich local cuisine.
